“EM7000 is designed to offer all of the modern performance values expected in a 21st Century waterborne clear coat—fast dry and re-coat performance, optical clarity and color magnification when applied over pigmented base coats or transparent stains, and Ultra Low VOC, HAPs-free properties for a safe work environment. EM7000 offers urethane-type durability in a state-of-the-art acrylic resin formula. Our growing community of professional, artisanal and DIY customers will love EM7000’s user-friendly performance on a wide array of applications.”

If you’re looking for urethane-type durability in a water-based clear coat that’s non-yellowing and ready when you are for recoating, EM7000HBL is your go-to lacquer. EM7000HBL Water Based Acrylic Lacquer is an ultra clear water-based acrylic lacquer that utilizes advanced copolymer resins and HAPs-free solvent technologies for a unique, self-leveling clear coat designed for custom and commercial applications. Pros have always trusted EMTECH finishes to deliver incredible payoff to their fine woodworking and custom cabinetry projects—and EM7000 is no different.

EM7000HBL features exceptional optical clarity and color magnification when applied over pigmented base coats, i.e. painted surfaces, especially when you’re looking for a clear, hard shell to protect an underlying color coat. EM7000HBL non-yellowing lacquer features a unique adhesion characteristic allowing it to bond to a wide variety of properly prepared substrates such as exotic woods, plastics, carbon fiber and ferrous and non-ferrous metals.

    1. EM7000 is brush friendly when applied onto small to mid-size areas. Large panels will be difficult to finish without should brush marks. You can reduce EM7000 with SA5 Retarder to give it a bit more open time.

EM7000 offers a harder cured film when compared to the EM6500 summer blend (which is all we manufacture now – winter blend EM6500 has been discontinued).

  1. Thanks, Jeff.

If you were to rank EM7000, Superclear 9000, and EM9300 in order of most to least durable over EM6500, what would it be? I’m looking for my best choice of water-clear top coat over pigmented EM6500 for high traffic shelving.

    1. Mike,

The most durable finish for use over the EM6500 is out EM9300 Polycarbonate Urethane. This is due to its unique polycarbonate resin backbone, which is very chemical resistant. The next item to consider, and the most practical, is the EM7000HBL. Being as the EM6500 is already ‘top coat rated’ it is unlikely that a harder. more chemical resistant clear coat is required unless you want to change the sheen, i.e. from the stock satin sheen of the EM6500 over to a gloss, semi-gloss or a clear flat sheen. In this case I would direct you towards the EM7000HBL. In regards to the 9000sc, we find it to be a bit finicky when used over 6500 and other pigmented base coats – therefore I would guide you away from using the 9000sc for this use now that we have the EM7000 back on the market.

      1. Great info, thanks.

When applying 9300 or 7000 as a top coat over a completely cured EM6500, do you suggest scuff sanding prior to applying the clear? If so, what grit would be appropriate?

        1. A light scuff sanding with 600-grit aluminum oxide sand paper is a good way to remove any small surface defects that may telegraph through the clear clear coat. If there is no significant defect to sand-off I recommend a light wipe down with a solution of water and denatured alcohol to clean the surface prior to applying the clear coat.

    1. Patrick – EM7000 offers modest UV protection. It is not a strong in blocking UV light as the EM9300 Polycarbonate Urethane.

  2. How will this perform pertaining to adhesion and durability applied to metal? What would be the best option for a clear coat on metal?

    1. David — Thank you for your inquiry. We recommend the EM6000 Production Lacquer, EM7000HBL Lacquer or the EM9300 Polycarbonate Urethane for clear-DTM finish applications.

  3. JOHNNY c PFEIFFER

I am refinishing a 20 year old kitchen table. It has a clear lacquer finish on it now. I’m trying to clean and sanding it down. Can I spray EM7000HBL Water Based Acrylic Lacquer on top of the old finish? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

    1. Johnny –
Thank you for your inquiry. You can use EM7000HBL with CL100 Crosslinker added at 5% by liquid volume to offer improved chemical resistance to the coating.
We recommend a minimum of 4 coats at 2-3mils wet per coat to ensure good physical properties.

    1. Wayne – Thank you for your inquiry. No, EM7000HBL is not made for use on any exterior substrates, automotive or architectural alike. It is strictly made for interior wood finishing applciations.
