EM9300: High End Clear Finish with Exterior Grade Durability
100% Polyurethane Tough, 100% Clear and Non-Yellowing, 100% Water Based Formula
EM9300 Polycarbonate Urethane is a cool, clear, non-yellowing, exterior grade, polyurethane coating. Our polyurethane finish is engineered with a polycarbonate resin structure that is superior to the polyester resin structures of most polyurethane finishes on the market today. EM9300 Polycarbonate Urethane was designed to provide exceptional adhesion over a wide range of surfaces. This clear water based polyurethane finish provides excellent water resistance on exterior exposed vertical surfaces. EM9300 Polycarbonate Urethane contains UV light reflectors for sun exposure to prevent the finish from yellowing and resists graying or fading of the clear coated surface. Our water based polyurethane has a low VOC content for your health and safety during application. Unlike oil based polyurethane, EM9300 Polycarbonate Urethane is fast drying, non-flammable, cleans up with soap and water, and makes storage and disposal safe and simple.
A Versatile Finish to meet your High-End Requirements
EM9300 Polycarbonate Urethane is formulated as a final topcoat for high-end applications such as exterior structural/architectural woodwork, window/door trim, doors, kitchen/bathroom cabinets, interior/exterior furniture, and any surface that requires a hard yet flexible coating in high UV light and moisture exposed environments. This water based super clear finish is spray, brush, and roller friendly to giving you multiple options for application. EM9300 Polycarbonate Urethane’s exceptional gloss combined with its exterior rating will give you the confidence knowing that not only will your project have a beautiful and durable finish but it will also be able to withstand the elements and look fantastic for years to come.
A “Candy Coat” for your Color Coat
EM9300 Polycarbonate Urethane can also be used as a topcoat over our EM6500 Pigmented Lacquer to provide a durable, scratch resistant, super clear, colorfast, water repelling, UV light blocking, and chemical resistant polyurethane finish. Application of a clear water based finish over your painted surfaces will keep the paint looking fresh and brand new for years to come.
Our interior rated coatings like EM1000, EM6500, EM6600 and NR4000 can be topcoated with EM2000wvx or EM9300 to give these coatings an exterior rating. When using this application method, a
minimum of 4 coats at 3-4 mils wet thickness is recommended for proper protection of these interior rated coatings. It should be noted that the durability and colorfastness of these coatings using this technique is more suited for indirect and moderate UV light and moisture exposure. For constant and direct UV light and moisture exposure, we recommend that EM2000wvx and EM9300 are used as a stand alone finish.

Excellent Adhesion Capabilities
EM9300 Polycarbonate Urethane features a unique adhesion characteristic that allows it to bond to a wide variety of properly prepared substrates such as wood, plywood, engineered wood substrates, exotic woods, non-ferrous metals, plastics, PVC, stone, masonry, fiberglass, and carbon fiber. This feature gives greater latitude of use for the finishing professional when working with EM9300, especially when application involves the necessity of an exterior grade, clear, non-yellowing topcoat.
Using our Water Based Polyurethane over Oil Based Stains
EM9300 Polycarbonate Urethane can be applied over your favorite oil based stain or gel stain. Proper surface preparation for application of our water based polyurethane over oil based stains or gel stains is as follows:
- Oil based stains and gel stains need to be thoroughly dried and cured. This varies by manufacturer but is usually 18-24 hours after application of the stain. Please consult with the stain manufacturer for drying times of the product you are using.
- Lightly wipe the surface of the oil based stain with a mixture of 1:1 water and denatured alcohol. No scrubbing necessary, just a light wipe to remove any oily residue from the surface. Allow the water/alcohol mixture to fully flash off and dry from the surface.
- For the best results, your first coat of EM9300 Polycarbonate Urethane should be a light “tack” coat to allow for the best adhesion to the stain and to confirm compatibility. From there you can proceed as normal with your build coats of our water based topcoat.
Because there are many variations in formulas for products on the market today, we recommend as a standard finishing practice that a sample is made and tested for product compatibility, proper adhesion and bond of topcoat to base substrate.
Using our Water Based Polyurethane over an Oil Based Polyurethane or a previously applied solvent based finish
EM9300 Polycarbonate Urethane can be applied over oil based polyurethane and most previously applied solvent based coatings. Proper surface preparation for application of our water based polyurethane over previously applied oil based or solvent based finishes and topcoats is as follows:
- Newly applied solvent based finishes will need to be thoroughly dry and cured before application of EM9300. Dry times will vary by type of coating and solvent base. Please consult the manufacturer of the solvent based coating for dry times.
- Old solvent based finishes will need to be thoroughly cleaned of any contaminants.
- Scuff sand both new and old finishes with fine, 220G – 320G, sandpaper.
- Wipe down both new and old finishes with a mixture of 1:1 water and denatured alcohol.
- Application of our EM9300 Polycarbonate Urethane can proceed as normal.
Because there are many variations in formulas for products on the market today, we recommend as a standard finishing practice that a sample is made and tested for product compatibility, proper adhesion and bond of topcoat to base substrate.
How to Enhance Topcoat Durability **INTERIOR APPLICATIONS ONLY**
EM9300 Polycarbonate Urethane can be fortified with our CL100 CrossLinker to create a post-catalyzed type clear polyurethane finish. Because CL100 increases the hardness of the coating which in turn decreases flexibility in the cured finish, we recommend additions of the cross-linker into EM9300 for use in interior applications only. The addition of up to 5% by liquid volume of CL100 will improve the physical durability of our waterborne urethane by tightening the molecular structure of the cured resin. CL100 improves the resistance of the cured film against high pH cleaners, alcohols and slow evaporating household chemicals.
